Confronting Overlapping Epidemics: HIV and Mass Imprisonment
This May, 30 HIV/AIDS and prison/jail activists and organizers (including activists who have experienced imprisonment), researchers, strategists, and foundation staff from across the country will convene at the Stony Point Center to develop grassroots campaigns aimed at reducing new HIV infections tied to the massive rates of incarceration in the United States. Mujeres and CHAMP's Prevention Justice Partnership: Another Lesson Learned
Throughout the history of Mujeres Unidas Contra el SIDA (Mujeres), it has been our practice to take many risks and learn from new experiences. One such experience has been our participation with CHAMP as Prevention Justice Partners. It was a unique experience for Mujeres in coming together and getting past the intimidation of learning how to launch an advocacy campaign based on an issue that has personally affected San Antonio, especially our Latino community. HIV Prevention Research Advocacy Takes Off
With the failure of the most promising HIV vaccine in clinical trials last year and the closing of microbicide trials of two different products, the field of HIV prevention research has suffered a string of set backs. Now more than ever, it's important that advocates increase our efforts to push for more and better prevention research. Same War, Different Battle
Two years after we founded CHAMP, we started to... well, look a lot better! When Lei Chou joined our staff as Director of Mobilization, he brought to the CHAMP effort not only his art skill and design sensibilities, but also one of the sharpest strategic minds in the AIDS movement. This month, Lei moved to Treatment Action Group (TAG) to serve as HIV and Hepatitis Project Coordinator. Meet the Staff: Kenyon and Coco
We'd like to take a moment to introduce two of our staff members to everyone: Kenyon Farrow and Coco Jervis. Kenyon joined CHAMP in January as our Director of Communications. Coco begins working with us on Monday, April 21 as our new Director of Policy and Leadership Development. Be a CHAMP Volunteer!
In the New York City area and interested in volunteering with CHAMP? CHAMP organizes monthly community forums - The Politics of HIV Prevention - that explore issues such as the ban on Federal funding for syringe exchange, housing as prevention, immigration policies, abstinence-only education in our schools, and universal healthcare. We're putting together a group of volunteers to help us with the forums and welcome your involvement.
