Prevention Research Advocacy Working Group (PRAWG)

Demanding Data for HIV Prevention Justice

CHAMP’s Prevention Research Advocacy Working Group (PRAWG) is linking activists and researchers to identify and develop new HIV prevention strategies.

Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the work of independent, collaborative community activists has been vital to HIV treatment research.

But no movement has demanded, and contributed to, comprehensive HIV prevention research.

The lack of informed and organized community engagement has allowed prevention research to occur in isolation, leaving the research infrastructure under-funded, misdirected, and vulnerable to attack.

We are entering a key moment in HIV prevention. Challenges range from setbacks in vaccine trials to rising incidence in young gay men in the United States. We need a whole new approach in HIV prevention research to inform and improve our practices.

That’s why CHAMP is working with our allies to train, support and build the capacity of people from communities most affected by HIV to influence and improve prevention research. We will get the data we need in the fight for prevention justice by demanding strategic and comprehensive research.

RESEARCH ADVOCACY TRAININGS

In 2007 and 2008, CHAMP in partnership with AVAC, TAG, amFAR and SFAF, led several day-log workshops for People Living with HIV/AIDS and community activitsts.  These workshops armed communities impacted by AIDS in the United States with the information and skills to be effective prevention research advocates.  Workshops offered a unique opportunity for leaders in research, policy and grassroots communities to come together to share information and perspectives on HIV prevention research, examined within a social justice framework.
