HIV Prevention Justice Alliance: Why

Why the HIV PJA?

Because the past years have not been good for HIV prevention justice, and the coming years must be if we are to turn the tide on this epidemic. And together we will turn the tide through unified, strategic mobilization.

Our organizations have been starved for resources, and our efforts have been obscured or attacked by an unfriendly federal administration. The news on the incidence of HIV being even higher than thought, and then the confirmation of the sky-high prevalence of HIV in our nation’s capitol, can challenge our resolve even as it shocks the nation into paying more attention.

But now— in an era of hope and opportunity despite ongoing economic challenges— it’s vital for our organizations to move forward to gain ground in confronting HIV/AIDS through sound prevention policies. In the next two years alone:

➢ the economic crisis will bring new inquiry into inequality and the social determinants of health, like employment and housing access;

the federal government will move forward on an unprecedented National AIDS Strategy;

the nation will see real health reform that will include some degree of preventive care;

➢ the CDC will announce their new directions
for five years of funding for state health departments and community organizations; and

➢ the National Institutes of Health will re-construct the mandate
for HIV/AIDS clinical trial sites conducting prevention research in and beyond the United States.

Bearing the slogan that “HIV/AIDS is not just a disease; it’s proof positive of injustice,” we will bring marginalized communities and issues to the center of an effective HIV/AIDS advocacy effort and make human rights issues central to the AIDS response.

Join us!

We invite you to join our alliance and mobilize around policy goals in three primary areas:

the need for a paradigm-shift in prevention that addresses social determinants, such as poverty, that are primary drivers of the epidemic;

the method of research as a means of framing and answering questions in overlooked communities; and

the strategy of cross-governmental collaboration (including the need for an operative national AIDS strategy) in order to coordinate Federal, state and local efforts to prevent HIV.
