How We Do It
CHAMP is building a vibrant and solid activist infrastructure. As an
intergenerational, cross-community alliance, CHAMP is setting the stage
for new victories in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
GOAL: Build a movement for HIV prevention justice!
Methods:
a. Strengthening existing coalitions and networks
b. Building new coalitions and alliances
c. Leading national policy campaigns and mobilizations, and contributing to the campaigns and mobilizations of our allies
d. Assisting with planning sessions, providing facilitation, and improving the strategic thinking in our movement
e. Developing and using rapid response mechanisms
f. Giving “referrals & recommendations’ to help people work together
GOAL: Shape how constituents, allies, targets and the media think about issues and think about themselves!
Methods:
a. Developing frames and messages on HIV prevention justice
b. Disseminating frames, messages and information that we produce or on which we collaborate
c. Providing selective distribution services for the work, issues and alerts of allies
d. Working with a range of mass and niche media as spokespeople, sources and content providers
e.
Engaging in political education that gives a context to current
struggles, a worldview that encourages involvement, uses a framework of
racial justice and sexual/gender diversity, and promotes a vision of
interconnection and solidarity that includes real steps towards change
GOAL: Strengthen organizations and networks!
Methods:
a.
Leading key federal policy coalitions and networks, like the Federal
AIDS Policy Partnership, Coalition for a National AIDS Strategy and our
Prevention Justice Alliance
b. Advising on issue areas and policy development
c. Helping groups develop good organizational practices
d. Working with local, state and national groups to mobilize, organize, advocate and/or wage policy campaigns
e. Providing curricula on skills and resources that strengthen orgs and networks
GOAL: Build a base of individuals united for HIV prevention justice!
Methods:
a. Reaching out at conferences, forums and community events
b. Building the size and diversity of our membership
c. Waging campaigns that have meaningful roles for individuals
Goal: Develop new leaders as forces of HIV prevention justice, including
current and future staff and leaders of the CHAMP Network!
Methods:
a. Prioritizing leadership of people of color, HIV+ people and/or LGBTQ people
b.
Launching a membership structure in which we provide a leadership
ladder for stepwise, track-able progress to higher levels of
responsibility
c. Providing training for our current and future members and
supporters, and for members of allied movements, both as “stand-alone”
and as a part of campaigns and mobilizations
d. Supporting new leaders in our campaigns and in our coalition efforts, and providing mentorship
e. Ensuring that our staff, interns and volunteers develop their
skills and have a positive experience in our organization and movement
f.
Bringing grassroots and other HIV/AIDS emerging and established leaders
to key meetings, conferences, and decision-making bodies
GOAL: Gather and distribute resources for HIV prevention justice and movement building!
Methods:
a. Using online tools to ensure widespread, easy and free or low-cost access to materials, training and support
b. Educating donors and funders on the need to support movement-building, advocacy, and innovative public health efforts
c. Hosting events that bridge fundraising and movement-building
d. Providing financial and technical support for mobilizations
e. Creating easy and rewarding ways for individuals and organizations to donate money to CHAMP
