SPECIAL TELEFORUM
PRESENTED BY THE RESEARCH WORKING GROUP OF THE PrEP COMMITTEE
THE INTERMITTENT PrEP (iPrEP) RESEARCH AGENDA:
What is iPrEP? Where do we stand with the research?
Where do we need to go from here?
A conversation with researchers and sponsors
of trials currently testing daily usage of PrEP
April 2, 2009
Recording and Materials Available
Background
All current trials of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) test daily dosing with either tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) or a combination of TDF and emitricitabine (Truvada).
However, not everyone wishing to take PrEP will want - or be able to - take it on a daily basis. Lifestyles and potential exposures to HIV vary across different groups and at different times in people's lives.
This dialogue will explore what intermittent dosing means and what our expectations as advocates are of iPrEP. We will also engage researchers on the future of iPrEP studies: are they feasible, how do we design these trials, and when, where and in what groups can we test iPrEP?
Speakers
- Carl Dieffenbach, Director, Division of AIDS, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland
- Lynn Paxton, Leader of the Antiretroviral Chemoprophylaxis and Microbicides Team, Epidemiology Branch, Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta
- Frances Priddy, Senior Director, Medical Affairs, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), New York

Who are the Call Organizers? What is the PrEP Committee?
The Research Working Group is a subcommittee of the PrEP Committee, which was established by the Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP), the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) and Project Inform in 2008. The PrEP Committee creates a US advocacy base that identifies questions that must be answered, fosters discussions in and beyond our communities about the opportunities and challenges of this potentially successful intervention, and prepares for advocacy efforts to ensure access to PrEP if proven effective. We welcome you to join us!
The Research Working Group is co-chaired by Yasmin Halima (AVAC, New York) and Richard Jefferys (Treatment Action Group, New York).
