Rally in NYC Against Budget Cuts for HIV/AIDS Programs

By Coco Jervis

In response to New York State Governor David Paterson's stunning declaration in August that he would drastically cut already under-funded prevention, education and support services for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS, outraged advocates staged a rally on August 15th demanding a restoration of funding. Chanting "AIDS Cuts Kill," CHAMP volunteer Emily Metzner, along with approximately 150 people representing AIDS services and advocacy organizations throughout New York City, gathered in front of Paterson's office to put him on notice about the devastating toll the proposed cuts would have.

The 2008 State budget for HIV/AIDS programs in New York City has already been slashed by 2% which is coupled by a 40% decrease in funds by the city council. Advocates fear that support and care services for people living with HIV such as housing, legal services, HIV testing and counseling, prevention programs, substance abuse outreach and education will be hit the hardest as some agencies may have to turn people away.

Last month, the NYC Department of Health released their revised incidence numbers for 2006, showing that the rate of new HIV infections in the city was three times that of the national average.
